(From James Smillie's Mount Auburn Illustrated in Finely Drawn Line Engravings. Courtesy of Mount Auburn Cemetery) Questions for Drawings 3 & 4 1. Study Drawing 3 and Drawing 4. Do you think the landscape of the new cemetery (Drawing 4) successfully captured the same feelings that the English landscape (Drawing 3) embodied? Explain your answer. 2. Mount Auburn is an arboretum of great renown, with over 5, trees, though no American chestnuts exist within the Cemetery’s acres. This book tells the story of the American chestnut and the mysterious blight that infected these majestic trees in the early 20 th -century.
Mount Auburn is the first cemetery in the country to receive such a grant. The page illustrated book — with a foreword by Dave Barnett, CEO of Mount Auburn, and an introductory essay by David B. Dearinger, the Boston Athenæum’s director of exhibitions — was published in the fall. Described in Mount Auburn Illustrated, , as “a lofty cenotaph of pure white marble, ornamented on the four sides with festoons of roses in relieve, and presenting altogether a monument of good proportion, strikingly chaste and simple.”.
Among the highlights are Jacob Bigelow’s Elements of Technology (), Cornelia Walter’s Mount Auburn Illustrated (), series of cemetery and funeral industry periodicals, and numerous 19th-century guidebooks about the Cemetery including those by Nathaniel Dearborn and Moses Brown. Mount Auburn holds several 19th-century oil paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts for Story and Bigelow Chapels, in addition to many prints, watercolors, drawings, and contemporary works of art. Of note are an souvenir tea cup, a 19th-century china pin tray, and an girandole set with Bigelow Chapel as the motif.
